Discourse Memo

Hello and above is my discourse community map that I will give a brief explanation about to get a better understanding. To begin my discourse community map will be about my church and all the different things inside my community and the problems within and how I would change them to make it better. One problem within my community is the sermon that is being presented to the people in the community by the pastor and some of the others that speak, now to me I understand what is being said and so is the audience but its the same thing being said over an over and is sometimes directed towards the audience when it shouldn't be. I would change that by just taking the sermon completely out of my community and just have the choir sing.

Thank you for reading this Sincerely, Laquan Williams.

Genre Analysis

The genre used in my discourse community is text and media and I will explain why. The text used is the King James Version of the bible that is meant to read and understood & used as a guideline to a better life.

The media used is a song called "Praise Is What I Do", that helps or remind people to give the lord praise in the good times and bad times weather happy or sad.

The discursive practices of the bible is that there's many different versions that have been produced since the biblical times but that's the one my community uses the KJV not the New International Version or NIV that is written in simpler terms to be better understood but it still has all the stories and lessons that are meant to be used in everyday life to better future experiences from the past.

The discursive practices for the song is to help people feel inspired & have comfort in times of need & stress to make their day go better when its going bad and to ensure that the lord will make all the troubles go away if you just give him praise it will take some time but they will go away.

From my perspective I feel that both of these genres are both effective in their own way to certain people because not everyone reacts to the same type of genre some may find the text more effective than the media and others may find the media to be more effective so it all depends on the person and/or audience, but in my community they are both equally effective because that's what they are used to since its a traditional value. But outside my discourse community the media will have a more effective turn out because that's what people are into today this day in age it's all about media and the song will bring more feelings to a person that is going through some hard times or even good times and the song is straight, simple and to the point with it's meaning.

The audience helped me come up with these conclusions because as a drummer for my church I get to see all the audiences reactions to certain songs that have huge meaning to it and that shows me that this song is a powerful song that hits the audiences heart and brings out there emotions from past and present times.

Visual Analysis

The visual chosen happens to be a white and black street sign pointing towards heaven with bold black lettering, being held by a white teenager in a black long sleeved shirt, with a black and gray beanie with a little piece of his hair showing out the black of the beanie. As he stands he's starring up towards the sky and a light starts to shine down upon his face as if to be descending down from heaven. The bold lettering on the street sign is ONE WAY with a caption under the the visual saying TRUTH Plain and simple- Jesus is the Truth.

The linguistic message you get out of the visual, is that if you're seeking the the truth Jesus is the truth you need and that means that any questions that you might have or may be wondering about just ask Jesus and he will provide for you the truth or answer you were seeking to find. The pure image that stands out in the visual is that the teen used an ordinary street sign to symbolize an inspirational/motivational message to himself and to others that come across this visual and to those that already have acknowledge that Jesus is the truth.

The visual signified salvation, motivation, inspiration, and answers, the sign would have to be people coming together despite the age as one on the same journey to find the truth that they have been searching in the wrong direction when it was closer than ever expected it to be. The type of cultural knowledge to better understand this visual and or message would have to be people that accepted Jesus or people that are on their way to seeking Jesus, and or people that don't have anything else but Jesus with them.

This visual has an coded and non-coded iconic message within itself, the coded message would be that its an ordinary street sign like the ones we see everyday but pointing up and the words on the sign is used to depict two meanings instead of one and the non coded message would be to be faithful, willing to understand the truth they set out to find, to be ready to handle the answers to the questions they ask, and why this was the answer. Also the visual connotes that a street sign can be used to point people into the right direction when there looking for the truth and answers and who to get it from, it denotes that there's only one way to find the truth, there's one way to get answers, there's one way to look when asking that person for answers/truth, and there's one way to get into that place we all want to go to.
